Ian Campbell

My name is Ian Campbell and I am the Director of Operations atthe Sailing Center. I've been sailing here for 20 years and this is my 11th year working here. I live in Southwest Harbor,and  as always looking forward to another great summer with the staff and sailors.

Helen Bernhard

My name is Helen Bernhard and I’m the Program Director of MDI CSC. I’ve been sailing here for fifteen years and this is my seventh year working here! I go to the University of Denver and while I love the Rocky Mountains, I really miss the ocean! I’m looking forward to a great summer and can’t wait for all of our sailors to come!



Nick Hill

My name is Nick Hill and I'm from Baltimore City, MD and attended Friends School of Baltimore. I started sailing on the high school sailing team there when I was in 8th grade. I am currently a sophomore at Bates College and I serve as part of the leadership team of the Sailing Team. I fell in love with sailing at MDICSC in 2003 when I was 6 years old and I'm super stoked to be going on my fifth summer working here as well!

Kevin Elk

I am 20 years old and am a life-long resident of Bar Harbor. In the fall I will be entering my junior year at Bowdoin College, where I am an active member of the sailing team and am pursuing a major in neuroscience and a minor in math. Unable to attend MDICSC as a camper, I became associated with the Center through my participation with the MDI high school sailing team, and immediately knew I wanted to be involved. When I'm not at the Center or racing in the weekly IOD/Luders series, you can almost definitely find me playing some variety of music somewhere on the Island.

Spencer Kachmar

I am a local resident of Southwest Harbor. I’ve been involved with the sailing center for over 10 years and I have been working here for 4 years. I ride my scooter to work everyday, and I currently attend Villanova University in Pennsylvania. I’m looking forward to another great summer!

Allison Gingerich

I have been at MDICSC for 13 years. I grew up learning to sail on the island as well as in my hometown of Annapolis, where she sailed for her high school. I have sailed in several large 420 regattas along the coast, as well as local keelboat regattas on the island and in my hometown. I now attend St Marys College of Maryland, where I am an active member of the sailing team. This will be my 4th year coaching at MDICSC and I’m very excited for the summer.


Connor Ratcliff

I grew up about five minutes up the road from the sailing center and have been here every summer since I was 5. I've been an instructor for three years here working with the 420 program. I currently go to school at Eckerd College where I am also on the coed dinghy team.

Ellen McInnes

My name is Ellen McInnes, and I am from a small town in Western New York. I enjoy drawing and sports in my free time. I recently graduated high school, and I will be attending Dickinson College in the fall. I have been coming to Southwest Harbor all my life, and I have been part of the sailing center for eleven years. I am a second year instructor and am very excited for this summer!

Ellie Hopkins

My name is Ellie Hopkins. I am currently 16 years old. I live in Newtown Square Pennsylvania. I will be going into my senior year at The Lawrenceville School, which is a boarding school in Lawrenceville NJ. I started sailing at the MDICSC when I was 6 and have being sailing every summer since. In school, I play tennis and squash.

Alec Fischella

I am currently a student at Mount Desert Island High School and a member of the school sailing team. Before becoming an instructor at the MDI Community Sailing Center I was a camper there for 7 years and took part in both the Opti Racing and 420 Racing programs. In addition to sailing, I am an aspiring musician and I perform in both community and school ensembles throughout the year.

Morgan Roberts

My name is Morgan Roberts, and I am 17 years old from Charleston, South Carolina. This will be my second year as a sailing instructor and 10th summer at MDISC. I have raced optis, 420s, and iODs with my dad. During the school year, I am busy playing lacrosse for my high school team. I love spending time with kids and jumping the causeway. I am looking forward to another great summer at MDISC!

Christiaan Smith

My name is Christiaan Smith. I am 17 years old and live In Annapolis, Maryland. I have been sailing my whole life and it has been a great part of my life. I am currently on the sailing team at my school as well.  When I’m not sailing, I love playing sports like tennis and soccer or hanging out with my friends.

Lucas Ingebritson

I am currently a Junior at Mount Desert Island High School and am a member of the MDIHS sailing team. I sailed in the Bullseye and 420 racing programs for 6 years before becoming an instructor. Aside from sailing, I am on the MDIHS robotics team.

Davis Block

My name is Davis Block. I am rising senior at The Shipley School and I live in Villinova. Pennsylvania. I have been coming to Southwest Harbor my whole life. I was a camper for 6 years and was a instructor for the first time last year. One of my favorite places on MDI is Crow Island which is off of Great Cranberry Island.

Ryer Hastings

I’m Ryer Hastings and I have been sailing at MDICSC for 10 years! I was a Counselor in Training for the past 2 years and this is my first year being a certified instructor! I am 16 years old, I live in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania and spend my whole summers here in Southwest Harbor. I am super excited for this summer because I love all our staff, new and old students, and sailing!!!

Our Staff
MDICSC senior staff are at least level one certified US Sailing instructors. Having US Sailing certified instructors is the standard for any safe, quality junior or adult sailing program.
