At MDI Community Sailing Center, there are sailing programs for all ages and levels. If you have never sailed and need to learn the basics, or if you just need to brush up on previously learned skills, we can help. All of our staff holds a minimum level one US Sailing instructor certification, and all have sailed the local waters off Mount Desert Island for many years.
Our summer Junior Programs set sail at the end of June with several alternate skill level groups for ages 6-17. From the basics of rowing and learning the “points of sail” to refining Opti / 420 racing skills, we have been continuously developing and improving upon our instruction format over the past 16 years to best meet the needs of all. For more information and a schedule, please visit our Junior Programs page. If you still have questions, don’t hesitate to call our office.
Our Adult Programs include both coed and women’s sailing clubs designed for intermediate level sailors and experienced sailors wishing to share their knowledge with new crew. During July and August we also offer an Adult Beginner Course, which consists of six evening classes. At the end of each session the students are encouraged to take a helmsman certification exam. When passed, that student will then be allowed full member boat usage for the remainder of the season. If you wish to have highly focused one-on-one instruction, we also can arrange a private lesson tailored to your needs. For more information and a schedule, please visit the Adult Programs page. If you are still unsure which program to take, give us a call. We are glad to help you find the program that best fits your needs.
